Matthew Unrath is the chief of the Income Statistics Branch in the Census Bureau’s Social, Economic, and Housing Statistics Division (SEHSD). The Income Statistics Branch is primarily responsible for collecting, processing, analyzing and publishing income data from the Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplement and American Community Survey. Unrath’s research focuses on income measurement and households' interactions with transfer policies and means-tested programs. His work has been published in the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy and the Brookings Papers on Economic Activity.

Unrath joined the U.S. Census Bureau and Income Statistics Branch as an economist in 2021. He holds a doctorate and master’s in public policy from the University of California, Berkeley.
