OCT. 31, 2024 — The U.S. Census Bureau today released the 2022 Census of Governments Finance Component which provides detailed data on revenues, expenditures and debt by level of government including state, local, and state and local figures combined. Local government data include counties, cities, township governments, special districts and public school systems.
The Census of Governments Finance Component is the only known comprehensive source of state and local government finance data collected across the nation using uniform definitions, concepts and procedures. The Census of Governments Finance Component includes the following data files:
The Annual State and Local Government Finance survey data have been collected annually since 1957. The Census of Governments is conducted every five years (years ending in 2 and 7). A sample of local governments is used to collect data in the intervening years. A new sample is selected every five years (years ending in 4 and 9).
